The high-volume transport sector is defined as the conveyance of cumbersome packages, or of a large quantity of freight. According to the customer’s needs, the transport means chosen may vary. Transporting several pallets generally requires a truck - such as a semi-trailer. For small quantities of cumbersome equipment, utility vehicles are often chosen. For specific units, transport may require the use of special convoys.
There are 5 specificities used to oversee the profession. They may be common to all experts concerned, or only aimed at companies specialized in certain types of services:

Services are available for professionals and private individuals;
Deliveries are done on a local, national or global scale;
Transport means differ depending on the type of package and the company selected: light utility vehicle, truck, special convoy;

High volume carriers can either be self-employed professionals, or may belong to a network of several agencies on a local, national or international scale.
Whether for private individuals or companies, high volume carriers follow the same steps. They start by receiving the goods, and ensure their delivery to the final destination. Safety and handling operations are also included in their services.
It should be noted that the criteria applicable to high-volume transport may vary depending on the task to be completed. This essentially concerns the weight and volume of the goods in question. The various constraints depend on the companies at play, on their ability to take on the packages and on their respective human and material resources.
For private individuals:
Packages exceed 20 to 30 kg;
The weight limit per unit is generally one ton. This estimate increases to 4.5 tons for the total ;
Height is limited between 180 and 200 cm, depending on the logistical resources rolled-out.
For customer companies:
Total load between 4 and 8 tons;
Pallets whose unit weight does not exceed 750 kg.
Volume-related limitations may be presented as cubic meter restrictions (m3), size in centimeters, or width x length x height.
A high volume carrier’s activity revolves around and freight. Their activity amounts to over 85% of transport flows in France, i.e. more than 330 billion tons of goods.
