GEFCO participates in the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) and improved its score in 2017 to achieve a B rating (up from a D in 2015). GEFCO is able to measure the carbon impact of its services (e.g. through Castor software) to help customers monitor and meet their targets. In 2017, GEFCO reduced its CO2 emissions by 2%, and is committed to a further 2% reduction in 2018.
GEFCO’s Quality and Environmental Policy provides day-to-day practical guidelines for employees and key performance indicators on day-to-day basis. These include, for example, awareness and adoption of “green” practices internally, compliance with regulation and formal standards (e.g. ISO 14001 on environmental management) and sharing of best practices.
Globally, 60 managers are tasked with coordinating and implementing GEFCO’s environmental management system, supported by local liaison officers. Each site has an Environmental Management Plan, in line with the Group policy, local regulations and, where relevant, ISO 14001 certification. Risk management plays an integral role, and is based on global GEFCO guidelines, including a global risk assessment system and a global building and equipment maintenance program. To monitor progress, internal evaluations are aided by external audits of specific activities such as chemical transport and warehousing.
All GEFCO business lines have set energy reduction targets in their roadmaps. In 2017, 59 sites received ISO 14001 certification, a successful renewal based on the 2015 version. In addition, more than 50 sites generated energy savings with 87 initiatives resulting in an energy reduction of 72MWh or 8% of consumption.

To minimize the use of water, GEFCO is upgrading its premises and its vehicle washing technology (e.g. by shifting to low-pressure steam cleaning systems that dramatically reduce the use of water and chemical products, while also reducing electricity consumption).
GEFCO’s objective is to reduce waste while increasing recycling and energy recovery (e.g. through incineration). Each site is responsible for its waste and waste treatment, following a global waste management procedure, which assigns responsibility and identifies the tools available for waste production, storage and treatment. Today, an average of 70% of the Group’s waste is recovered or recycled.
Another priority is to boost the energy efficiency of its vehicles, which includes more than 150 trucks for its Overland and Finished Vehicle activities. Maintaining its fleet in optimal condition and replacing old trucks with more efficient models (Euro 5/6 Standards) is helping to boost its environmental performance, along with service reliability and savings.
GEFCO’s drivers can also make a difference, which is why the Group has introduced eco-driving training to promote a smoother, safer, driving experience, while reducing fuel consumption and accidents.
